About

A mile or so northwest of Arnold is one of the most pristine lakes in all of Calaveras County. However, it wasn’t always like it is today. In 1962 the Blagen Lumber Mill closed and was dismantled in 1966. Plans were made to create a lake and residential subdivision by damming the San Antonio Creek. The completion of the dam created White Pines Lake, but the subdivision was never built. In 1977 the Calaveras County Water District purchased the lake and surrounding land. CCWD now operates the lake as a domestic water source.

In the mid-1980s a few community-minded citizens led by Al Harber were concerned because people were abusing the lake and using the surrounding area as a dump site. This small group of people loved the lake and wanted to preserve it so that others could enjoy its beauty. They began cleaning up the area, and what is now known as the White Pines Park Committee was born. More generous neighbors joined in, and as others became aware of the movement it grew until we incorporated as a non-profit organization. The goal of the WPPC was to begin the planning and work that was necessary to turn White Pines into a “real park.”

CCWD agreed to lease some of its land to WPPC so that White Pines Park (and later the disc golf course) could be developed and maintained. Permanent improvements such as sewer, water, electric lines, and a paved road layout resulted from a one-time State-issued grant sponsored by the CCWD.

Since then we have been aided by the Lions Club, Rotary Club, Loyal Order of the Moose, and by donations from businesses, groups and individuals.

Many shade trees have been planted over the years, and amenities have been added including: drinking fountains, picnic tables, pergolas, barbecue pits, horseshoe pits, permanent restrooms, fitness stations, a children’s playground, basketball court, sand volleyball court, pickleball court, the reservable Lions Grove group picnic area, and a swimming beach maintained annually.

Other essential improvements have included: paved parking lots, steps for easier access to the beach, a small boat ramp, storage facility for park equipment, and ADA-compliant parking, picnic area, restrooms, and graded/paved pathways.

There are numerous improvements and projects on the “wish list” along with regular maintenance costs that need to be funded. Unlike other public parks, we do not receive monetary support from any government agency nor have any paid employees. WPPC operates solely on donations and volunteers. Please help us by becoming a White Pines Park Partner.

White Pines Park needs constant TLC as more and more people become aware of this wonderful place for family and friends. WPPC is always looking for volunteers to help maintain this beautiful park. You are welcome to attend our meetings at 6pm on the 3rd Monday of each month (March through November) at the Ebbetts Pass Fire Station.
